How To Calibrate A Measuring Tape

Whatever you are measuring, a measuring tape is critical to getting an accurate result. If you are building a boat, you need to rely on your measuring tape to craft a safe vessel. Precise measurements are essential if you are making cuts in the wall to install a door or a window. While some situations provide you with wiggle room, others rely on precision.

If your measuring tape is regularly calibrated, you will receive an accurate reading every time. So, it would be best if you established a schedule to calibrate yours to ensure precise measurements.

The Importance of Calibration

Whatever job you complete must have the right tool to get it done. In addition to having the right tool, you need a precise instrument that operates efficiently. Calibrating your measuring tape will ensure you do the job right the first time.

Calibrating a measuring tape means that you compare its accuracy against a measuring tool you know to be accurate. The hook and its markings can also influence your measuring tape’s accuracy. Whatever class of measuring tape you use should be calibrated from time to time. Yes, even a Class I measuring tape requires calibration. Calibration should be done annually at a minimum, though six-month intervals are better. Of course, you should always calibrate a brand-new measuring tape before you use it.

How To Calibrate Your Measuring Tape

There are two ways to calibrate a measuring tape. The first is with a measuring tape calibrator.

If you do not have a calibrator, you can complete the task manually with a trusted straight ruler. You will also need two sets of pliers. Examine the hook to clean any debris, and check for cracks around the rivet. A damaged tape will not benefit from calibration. Start by checking the inside measurement’s accuracy. Press the outside of your measuring tape and the rule against the same surface and check that the marks align. Make a note of the differences if they do not align. Repeat the process for the outside measurement. If these align perfectly, then there is no need to make any adjustments. If they do not align, you will need to adjust the hook.

A measuring tape calibrator has a slot where you can place your measuring tape. It makes it easy to check the push and pull, and it’s as simple as that. Some measuring tape calibrators also have a slot made for you to adjust the hook.

Adjust The Hook

If the inside measurement difference exceeds the inside measurement, you must bend the hook toward the tape. Suppose it’s less than; bend it out from the video. The difference is how much you need to turn, but be careful because you can readjust it if it still doesn’t calibrate. If the measurements suggest opposite adjustments, you must invest in a new measuring tape. However, you can try the process again if you need help determining whether you completed the task accurately.

You will have to recalibrate the measuring tape after you adjust the hook and continue doing so until it measures accurately.
