PVC Window, Door, and Conservatory Maintenance

  • The grained foiled finishes are also available inside, but white UPVC is more popular because it is less noticeable and more straightforward to clean than the other options.

Oak, Mahogany, Rosewood, and now even custom colors are available for the foils, which are relatively new to the industry. Different tones of grey, red, and blue and more traditional wood tones like Irish oak and rustic cherry.

The best approach to clean a window frame will vary depending on the finish the customer selected. However, regardless of the PVC components used, the product’s upkeep requirements for its functional components and general principles will remain the same.

Customers had PVC installed 18 years ago, which could have an aesthetic impact. With the correct tools and supplies, the PVC panes of your windows and doors should look as good as new again.

Even while there are methods for revitalizing old windows, it’s crucial to remember that the glass’s performance won’t be as good as the new energy-efficient windows and doors currently on the market. Handles and locking mechanisms are moving elements that might break down and cause difficulties if not serviced every three to six months.

Simple tidying up.

When the windows are opened, a channel containing the hinges and locking keeps becomes visible. Loosen the dirt with a little brush, then use a vacuum to remove it.

We recommend a nonabrasive cloth and soapy water for routine maintenance for cleaning PVC windows. Wash the inside and outside of the window with soapy water (a regular non-bleach detergent). After cleaning the entire frame, dry it with a clean cloth. Clean the rubber seals and the inside of the channel with the soapy cloth while the channel is open.

There will be a 5 mm dirt line around the opener where it shuts onto the window frame; this must be removed with a soapy cloth.

It’s also a good idea to wipe down the area along the top and sides of the window opener. If you pull the opener out as far as it will go, you’ll be able to see the access point at the top of the opener.

If there are any stubborn marks on the PVC frames or glass, the glass cleaner or solvent we recommend further down the page should do the trick.

If you splash glass while decorating and leave behind microscopic specks, you can remove them using a Stanley knife’s flat, sharp blade or something similar. If there are any particularly obstinate marks on the glass, you can try to scrape them off with a blade, but you must proceed with extreme caution that you scratch the surface. Take your time and use it as flatly as possible. Avoid this method or hire an expert if you are unsure about your abilities.

Cleaning fluids, lotions, and aerosols

What you apply to your PVC windows and doors depends on their color and age. How dirty something is, especially if it has been ground in, will affect the effectiveness of any cleaning chemical used on it.

If the window is made of white PVC and is not too old, a simple wipe-down with soap and water should do the trick.

When applying anything other than soapy water, always use a purpose-made industrial paper roll, which may be purchased at any PVC retailer. You can also use high-quality kitchen towels for the window casings, although this is not recommended for the glass. (discussed below)

Older doors and windows

Choose a PVC cream cleaner from a reputable DIY store if the window is older and needs a little extra oomph to get the job done. Avoid getting cream on glass and other surfaces not made of white PVC. Always use a fresh section of the roll to remove any surplus. The solvent can be used to put the finishing touches on it.

Having a bottle of high-quality, solvent-based PVC cleaning from your local do-it-yourself (DIY) store or PVC distributor. Get their opinion on what you need and what items to utilize. The dirt and tiny scratches on a white PVC window frame will come immediately with this. Don’t remove the silicone by accident. Start with a little amount of the solvent and work your way up to remove the silicone. This is the best technique to remove the stain if your silicone has gotten yellow from cooking or smoking.

Grain patterns in wood and custom paint jobs

Spray oils like WD40 can easily change the wood grain color or create custom colors. It will improve the final product and provide some protection for the window. It will lessen the sticking power of future dust and bird droppings. If your surface has a foiled finish, only use this method to clean it. White PVC windows cannot be cleaned well with spray oils. Spray the roll generously and wipe the glass clean in sweeping motions, but be careful not to get any cleaner on the glass.

Repairing Handles, Locks, and Hinges

If you have a spray oil like WD40, you can easily keep up with it. This upkeep must be performed every three to six months for trouble-free operation of windows and doors. These days, brochures with maintenance tips are standard issues for installation crews. If not, then solicit their guidance.

Handles

Apply some oil to the key and insert it into the handle lock. Try inserting the key and jiggling it around the lock a few times. If you don’t have the key, spray some inside the handle lock with the spray can’s straw nozzle. These locks might become slightly stiffened by moisture. The moment the lock is loosened, you will feel it. The most steam and condensation is produced in the kitchen and bathroom, and these rooms also have the most open windows.

Security locks

When you open the window sash, you’ll notice a set of lock keepers on the channel’s bottom. Spraying these briefly won’t hurt anything. However, if you run your hand under the opener itself, you’ll come across a locking mechanism and a series of roller cams that, when closed, lock into the lock keepers. The entire locking strip must be coated, often done from the inside. Otherwise, go outside and spray it down well.

To avoid future access issues, spray the key from the inside and the outside of your PVC doors. The locking strip can be accessed by opening the door on the handle side, which can be found in a groove on the sash opener’s side. This is the first thing to deteriorate even before the doorknobs and handles. Spray both when the door is closed (hooks in) and when the handle is lifted (hooks out) to the open position. Shoot bolts will be exposed while the system is locked; they should be sprayed with oil to prevent the mechanism from freezing.

To prevent significant friction from slight rusting, spray the hinges of the open PVC door. PVC door and conservatory cleaning instructions are the same as those for windows.

Hinges

When the window is opened, the hinges can be accessible from within the rebated channel of the window frame. The hinges will expand as the window is opened, making them simple to spray. Maintenance spray may loosen the hinges over time. However, there should be a tightening screw to restore their original state afterward. After the glass pane itself, the hinges on PVC windows are the most likely to break. If not treated, the dampness and moisture accumulated over the year will corrode the hinge. This pivots the sash. Hence it’s the most used portion of the window and must be maintained regularly. In salty coastal environments, rust spreads rapidly once it begins.

Glass washing

It’s a joint inquiry for anyone who puts in windows. How do you keep the windows streak-free? The straightforward response is that no magic is involved, and the only trick is to acquire a high-powered, purpose-built glass cleaner that leaves no smears.

Using a kitchen towel or toilet paper for application is not as effective as using a specially designed paper roll. This is because the cheap rolls will shred and leave fibers all over the window. Direct application to the glass and thorough coverage of all crevices is required.

Rub the window with the roll till the streaks disappear. Flip the roll over and buff the glass until it is scorched and polished. The exact process must be repeated on the exterior for the best glass polish.

If there are any sticky marks, a first application of solvent cleaner should do the trick. The glass can be cleaned with a solvent without risk. The glass cleaner can be used subsequently to restore its luster.

While the age-old vinegar-and-water method and other questionable suggestions may work for some, you’ll have no trouble achieving the desired Polish on your glazing if you get professional quality from a reputable PVC retailer.

As long as the PVC windows, doors, and conservatories have the same finish, they can be cleaned and maintained similarly.

If you are unsure of any of the above or lack self-assurance in your abilities, consult your local do-it-yourself store for guidance. Double glazing will suffer if you don’t use common sense and follow the preceding suggestions.
